5 Steps To Take If You Have A Broken Glass Window

Blog

A broken window is not going to keep your home safe, and a broken window is not going to keep the bugs out either. When you have a broken windowpane, you want to take care of the issue right away.

Step #1: Remove the Broken Glass

The first thing you need to do is remove all the broken glass from the window.

Don't just grab the glass and start to pull it out; you don't want to get cut. Instead, you need to put on some thick leather gloves so you don't get cut. You should also put on protective eyewear to keep you from getting glass in your eye in the chance that something shatters.

You may want to use a tool, such as a crowbar, to help you knock out the remaining pieces of glass from the window. You need a clean slate in order to replace the window.

Step #2: Remove the Putty

Around the window frame, you are going to need to remove the putty that held the glass in place. To remove the putty, you can use a razor blade. Scrape the razor blade under the putty in order to remove it. You want to get rid of all the putty so you will be able to replace the window easier.

Step #3: Purchase New Glass

Now you need to go out and purchase the new glass. You need to measure the opening so that you know the exact size of glass you need. Then, you are going to need to purchase the glass as well as some glass putty for installing the new window.

Step #4: Repair the Window Frame

Now that you have the supplies, it is time to repair the window frame. You are going to want to oil the window frame and smooth it down. Make sure the frame is in good shape before you try to install the glass. If the frame is not in good shape, fix it up first.

Step #5: Install the New Glass

Finally, you need to install the new glass. You will need to apply putty around the window frame and put the new glass in place. You want to connect the glass to the glazier points and make sure it is stable and correctly installed.

You don't have to do this whole process alone; you can hire a window repair company to replace your broken windowpane for you. They will be able to do the entire job within a couple of hours and make your window look like new.
